Calcutta High Court directs West Bengal government to file a comprehensive report on April 3 Violence in Shibpur of Howrah During and after the Ram Navami procession on 30 March.

Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Shubhendu Adhikari filed a PIL seeking an NIA probe into the violence, alleging that bombs were hurled in the violence and also prayed for deployment of central forces to ensure security in the area .

Advocate General SN Mukherjee, representing the state, said the situation in Shibpur was under control.

A division bench headed by Acting Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam directed the state government to file a comprehensive report on the incident and steps taken to ensure peace in the affected area adjoining Howrah city on April 5.

The division bench, also comprising Justice Hiranmoy Bhattacharya, directed the West Bengal government to submit CCTV and video footage related to the incidents of violence.

The court directed the police to ensure that people in the area are not affected and that school-going children and businesses are protected.

The court had directed the police to make adequate deployment as per the requirement.

The bench directed that the matter will be heard again on April 6.

The AG told the court that 36 people have been arrested in connection with the violence that broke out between two groups of people in Shibpur on March 30 and a day later.

On the petitioner’s allegations on a similar incident of breach of peace at Dalkhola in Uttar Dinajpur district during Ram Navami procession on March 30, the AG said the situation is under control and life is normal there.

Petitioner’s counsel Saumya Majumdar also referred to the incident of violence at Rishra in Hooghly district adjoining Howrah district on Sunday evening, following which internet connection was suspended there and prohibitory orders were imposed by the administration under Section 144 of CrPC. Went.

AG said that Section 144 is applicable in Rishra on Monday as well.
