Firefighters in Tiruchi, Perambalur, Pudukottai and Ariyalur prepared for Diwali by conducting awareness campaigns in government schools, colleges and public places in four districts, spreading the message of a ‘fire accident free Diwali’ at home.

During the campaign and through the distribution of pamphlets, necessary safety measures for bursting crackers, lighting sparklers and firing rockets and the need to take immediate steps in case of burns caused by bursting of crackers were explained.

Fire and Rescue Services Department officials said that awareness campaigns were being conducted at fire station level in four districts every day since last week, much before the festival. The campaigns were being carried out in schools, colleges and places where people gathered in large numbers, during which firefighters explained a safe way to celebrate Diwali and urged them to stop bursting high decibels crackers, officials said. Exercise was also being conducted.

As part of the awareness campaign, pamphlets listing do’s and don’ts while bursting firecrackers are being distributed to the general public. The pamphlet also contains the telephone numbers of fire stations in the four districts so that the public can contact them in case of fire. Firefighters have also mentioned specified timings for bursting firecrackers in the morning and evening on the day of the festival, as well as appealing to the general public to avoid bursting crackers near hospitals and old age homes.

On the eve of the festival and on the day of Diwali, firefighters will be in a state of alert for rapid action in case of fire accidents caused by bursting of firecrackers at all fire stations. Full strength will be gathered on the eve of the festival and on the day of the festival.

As part of an awareness campaign, a group of around 75 firefighters took out a motorcycle rally in Tiruchi on Thursday, emphasizing a ‘fire accident-free Diwali’. The rally, which started from Tiruchi Fire Station, covered vantage points like Head Post Office Junction, Central Bus Stand and Vestri School roundabout before returning to the fire station.
