Canadian truckers protest: India issues advisory for citizens; Helpline no.

The Indian High Commission has issued an advisory for citizens living in Canada or planning to travel to the country to take precautions in view of protests and public unrest by truck drivers in major Canadian cities.

Protests are currently taking place in several other major cities, including the Canadian capital Ottawa and Toronto, with road blockades, demonstrations, general strikes. “This has led to disruption of traffic and public transport, and shortages of essential commodities, including food and water,” Indian High Commission said,

It said the impact on traffic and services could continue and new restrictions, including curfews, could be imposed by local authorities.

Therefore, the Indian High Commission has asked citizens to “take a high level of caution and remain vigilant”. It advised Indian citizens to avoid areas where protests are taking place and asked them to monitor local media for information on the evolving situation.

The Indian High Commission in Canada has also set up a helpline number – 6137443751 for citizens in distress – to provide assistance and guidance to Indian citizens.

In addition, it asked Indian citizens in Canada to register through websites or the MADAD portal (madad.gov.in) with the High Commission in Ottawa or the Consulate General of India in Toronto and Vancouver.
