Over 50 lakh vehicles were de-registered in 2022 alone, the highest number of de-registrations done in a year. This is in line with the Supreme Court’s 2018 decision, which banned the plying of 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol vehicles on the roads of Delhi.
According to the data, of the 53,38,045 lakh vehicles that have been deregistered, 46 lakh were petrol vehicles, 4.15 lakh diesel vehicles and 1.46 lakh old CNG vehicles. As of January 31, 2022, there were 13.4 million vehicles plying on the roads in the capital city, of which only 7.8 million were classified as ‘active’, meaning they are still fit to drive in the city.
What are your options if your car is reaching its ‘end of life’?
For Delhiites, whose cars are about to cross the permissible age limit, one can either secure the fitness certificate for the vehicle or submit them for scrapping. While obtaining a certificate and continuing to drive your old car can be costly, choosing to scrap an old vehicle offers participants incentive benefits over a new car purchase in the capital.
