Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise arrives for the screening of Top Gun: Maverick in Cannes on May 18. He will also be honored with a special career tribute at the 75th edition of the prestigious film festival.

The film, which is the sequel to the actor’s 1986 film Top Gun, is scheduled to release in France on May 25 and in the US on May 27. Cruise, 59, attended the Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 1992 for Ron Howard’s Far and Away, the closing film of the 45th edition of the festival. He awarded the Palme d’Or to director Billy August for his film “The Best Intents of the Year”. The action star returned to the festival exactly 30 years later to receive tributes for his lifetime achievements.

Mission: Impossible Star fans gathered in large numbers outside the venue. Inside, he was part of a panel discussion for the masterclass section before the screening of his film. The moderator asked him, “Sir, you risk your life. Why do you do this?” Referring to his action movies and the crazy stunts done in them.

To this, Cruise replied, “No one asked Gene Kelly, ‘Why do you dance? Why do you dance your own dance?'” Cruz’s reply received a sharp response from Cannes attendees and it went viral on social media. It is also going viral on the media.

A sizzling reel of Cruise’s career that played before the conversation featured clips from his films such as Jerry Maguire, The Last Samurai, Rain Man, Minority Report and The Mission: Impossible Films. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the theater erupted to applause as Risky Business’s role, and a young Cruz, slid across the screen for Bob Seger’s Old Time Rock ‘n Roll. Conversations with Cruz were held at the festival’s 1,000-seat debut theater.
