Captain Amarinder’s new party will be called Punjab Lok Congress; Resignation letter sent to Sonia Gandhi

Captain Amarinder Singh stepped down as Punjab chief minister last month, citing “insults” after an acrimonious power struggle with Punjab MLA Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Punjab Lok Congress will be the name of Captain Amarinder Singh’s new political party, the former Punjab chief minister announced on Tuesday. The leader also sent his resignation from Congress to party chief Sonia Gandhi.

“I have sent my resignation today to @INCIndia President Ms Sonia Gandhi ji, listing my reasons for resignation. The name of the new party is ‘Punjab Lok Congress’. Approval pending with registration

@ECISVEEP. The party’s symbol will be approved later.”

Singh had stepped down as Punjab chief minister last month, citing “disgrace” after an acrimonious power struggle with Punjab MLA Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was appointed as the state Congress president. Singh, who was one of the powerful regional satraps of the Congress, also said that he had “never experienced such interference as chief minister”. Charanjit Singh Channi was chosen in his place.

The Captain had recently rubbished reports of any back-end talks with the Congress, saying “the time for friendship is over”. In a tweet by the leader’s media advisor, the Captain had said that he would, and would soon launch his party. After resolving the issue of farmers, talks with the Bharatiya Janata Party regarding the sharing of seats.
