Case against Delhi Uber driver for “sexually staring” at journalist

The Delhi Police has registered a case in connection with the incident in which a woman journalist was allegedly misbehaved by a driver in an Uber auto rickshaw in the national capital.

“Efforts are on to trace and nab the accused,” police officials said on Friday.

“On 02.03.23 at about 11.00 p.m., one Ms. X, a resident of Bharat Nagar approached Police Station NFC and lodged a complaint against a driver. She complained to NFC of indecent behavior as well as lewd stalking by him while traveling. at Malviya Nagar on 01.03.23 at about 4.40 p.m.,” read the official statement of Delhi Police.

Police have registered an FIR under IPC section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to outrage the modesty of a woman) and have launched a probe into the incident.

“Accordingly a case vide FIR No. 92/23 u/s 509 IPC dated 02.03.23 was registered in PS NFC and an investigation was conducted. Further possession of the above was obtained which is in the name of one Mohd Yunus Khan r/o A-439 Nehru Camp Govindpuri Delhi is being interrogated to nab the delinquent driver.

Earlier, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal said that a notice has been issued to Uber India and Delhi Police regarding the incident of molestation of a female journalist in Uber Auto in Delhi.

Speaking to ANI, the victim said, ‘I was going to my friend’s place in Malviya Nagar and I boarded the auto from NFC. I booked the auto through Uber. I was alone in the auto. Since I was listening to music. , Initially I did not understand what was happening. After some time I realized that the auto driver was staring at me in the left side mirror. My breasts were visible in the mirror and he was looking at me. I got uncomfortable and moved towards my ok. However, he changed his position and started looking at me in the mirror on the right.”

“After this, I went to the extreme left corner so that I could not see him but he turned back and started looking at me. I threatened him and said that I would complain and surprisingly he did not mind. The woman further said that the Delhi Commission for Women swung into action after she tweeted about the incident.

She said, “I tweeted about the incident at night. After my tweet went viral, the Delhi Commission for Women took action. I lodged an oral and written complaint with the commission. After all this, I came to file a complaint with the police.”

“Delhi Police has said that they will file an FIR and I need to appear before a magistrate tomorrow,” he said.

Demanding women’s safety in the national capital, she said, “The incident happened to me in broad daylight. I had the option of facing off as it was day time.
