Casino, Race Course, Online Gaming to attract 28% GST

The panel of ministers to review the GST levy on casinos, race courses and online gaming has finalized its report, which will be taken up in the upcoming GST Council meeting.

The Group of Ministers, headed by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, in its last meeting earlier this month, had unanimously decided to raise the tax rate on these services to 28%.

The GoM met again on Wednesday and finalized the manner of assessment of these services for the purpose of levying this tax.

Currently 18% tax

Currently, casino, horse racing and online gaming services attract 18$ GST.

In May last year, the government had constituted a panel of state ministers for better evaluation of services of casinos, online gaming portals and race courses for levying the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The report of the GoM is likely to come in the next meeting of the GST Council to be held later this month.

Other ministers of state in the eight-member GoM include Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Gujarat Finance Minister Kanubhai Patel, Goa Panchayati Raj Minister Mauvin Godinho, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister P. Thiagarajan, Uttar Pradesh Finance Minister Suresh Khanna and Telangana Finance Minister T. Harish Rao.
