‘Casualties cannot be accepted in Ukraine’

Foreign Secretary Harsh Shringla said on Sunday that India has made it clear that the death toll in the Ukraine conflict is unacceptable and that diplomacy and dialogue is the only way out of the situation.

Also, India is engaged with all parties involved in the conflict as it has “direct interests” and commonalities in the region, Shringla said at a media briefing. He said that India’s main priority is the safety and evacuation of its citizens from Ukraine and that the embassy in Kiev will ensure the safe evacuation of all citizens.

Shringla’s remarks came a day after India participated in a US-backed resolution in the UN Security Council condemning Russia’s “aggression” against Ukraine. India called for simultaneously respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the countries.

Asked about the loss of life in a military operation ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin in support of the separate regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, Shringla said: “At the United Nations Security Council, we deeply regret the evolving situation. We have also definitively pointed out that loss of human life is not acceptable.
