CBI registers fresh case against Karti Chidambaram on charges of bribery

NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday registered a fresh case against Karti Chidambaram, son of former Union minister P Chidambaram, on charges of bribery. Karti Chidambaram is accused of taking 50 lakh illegal bribe to facilitate visas for around 260 Chinese nationals to work in a project in Punjab.

After registering an FIR in the case, CBI teams on Tuesday conducted searches at 10 places in several cities of the country, including the residence of the father-son duo in Chennai and Delhi.

“I have lost count; how many times it has happened. Must be a record,” Karti Chidambaram said on Twitter, referring to the raid.

This case was earlier a preliminary inquiry, which has now been converted into an FIR. A case has been registered against six entities including two companies Karti Chidambaram and chartered accountant S Bhaskararaman.

In a press statement, the CBI said that a company based in Punjab’s Mansa was in the process of setting up a 1980 MW thermal power plant, the installation of which was outsourced to a Chinese company. The thermal plant in question belongs to Talwandi Sabo Power Limited, a Vedanta group company.

Email queries sent to the company were not immediately responded to.

“It is further alleged that the project was running behind its time. In order to avoid penal action for delay, the said private company of Mansa was trying to bring more and more Chinese persons/professionals to its site in District Mansa (Punjab) and project visa in excess of the limit imposed by the Ministry of Home Affairs. was required. case,” the CBI said in the press statement.

The CBI alleged that the company then approached Karti Chidambaram through an associate so that he could bypass the ceiling on the maximum permissible project visa.

“This was done by allowing the reuse of 263 project visas allotted to the officials of the said Chinese company,” the CBI said.

CBI said the company then submitted a letter to the home ministry seeking approval to reuse the project visa allotted to this company, which was approved within a month and permission was issued to the company.
