CCTV cameras not working in the police station, the hearing in the Information Commission revealed

Hearing in the Information Commission revealed that the CCTV cameras installed in the police station were not working.

A Right to Information applicant who had sought CCTV camera footage from a police station for a particular period was denied as the cameras were not working, a hearing in the Telangana State Information Commission (TSIC) has revealed. .

The matter came to light after the matter was posted before the TSIC in the last week of October before Chief Information Commissioner Buddha Murali.

As per the order, the applicant resident of Tekulapalle sought CCTV footage from the cameras of Konduragu police station in Ranga Reddy district from 28 March 2021 to 1 April 2021 from the Public Information Officer. His inquiry was transferred to the sub-inspector of police of Konduragu police station under Section 6(3) of the RTI Act, 2005.

When no information was received, the applicant filed the first appeal, and then transferred to TSIC with the second appeal.

The matter was heard on September 15, 2021, in which the TSIC directed the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Shadnagar Division, who is the appellate authority, to investigate and submit a report on the date from which the CCTV cameras are not working. TSIC also wanted to know the steps taken for rectification and adjourned the matter till October 29, 2021.

When the matter was heard again, the appellate authority submitted a detailed report to TSIC. After perusing the documents, the Commission observed that the Public Information Officers were unable to provide the CCTV footage as the cameras were not working during the said period.
