Center may take relevant steps for rehabilitation of medical students returning from Ukraine

new Delhi A senior government official said on Thursday that the central government may take relevant steps to rehabilitate the medical students returning from war-torn Ukraine.

Responding to a question about the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis as to how the central government is planning to rehabilitate thousands of medical students returning from conflict zones, Lav Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said, “These difficult are time. Relevant steps will be taken by the appropriate divisions in the coming time.”

Agarwal was speaking at a press conference on Thursday.

With the fate of thousands of Indian medical students hanging in the balance in war-torn Ukraine, the country’s doctors’ union is demanding a special provision under the National Medical Commission (NMC) to consider transfer of such students to medical colleges. Government universities in Ukraine providing quality medical education at affordable costs have been attracting Indian students for years. According to the country’s Ministry of Education and Science, there are about 18,095 Indian students in Ukraine.

It comes against the backdrop of an Indian student killed in a gunfight in Kharkiv, Ukraine. This comes at a time when the Indian government is trying to evacuate Indian nationals from Ukraine.

Amid escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine, thousands of budding medical students have safely returned to India after compromising on their studies. On February 24, Russia launched a massive military offensive on Ukraine. Thousands of Indian civilians, including medical students, are stranded in the conflict zone.
