Central team to assess the damage caused by rain in Pondi

Puducherry : An inter-ministerial central team will assess the damage caused by the recent torrential rains to farmland and other areas in Puducherry during its visit here on Monday.

Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Sundararajan and Chief Minister N Rangasamy, while visiting neighboring Tamil Nadu from Sunday, had appealed to the Center to depute a central team to the Union Territory.

Official sources said that after visiting the rain-affected areas in Tamil Nadu, the team will reach Puducherry and will visit the rain-affected areas here between 4.15 pm and 6.30 pm and will also hold a meeting with the Lieutenant Governor and the Chief Minister.

The CM had said that he had requested the Center to provide interim relief to the Union Territory to deal with the situation arising out of heavy rains for about 10 days under the influence of the northeast monsoon.

The release of water from some dams in neighboring Villupuram district caused massive inflow of water into the rivers and submerged large tracts of agricultural land.

There are reports of huts and houses collapsing. Recently one person drowned in Malattar river in Madukarai.

The Territorial Administration had also procured the services of the National Disaster Response Force to help move people to safer places.

Sources said that the government has prepared a detailed report on the rain havoc which will be submitted to the central team. Puducherry and Karaikal had to bear the brunt of the devastation caused by the torrential rains.
