Centre, Assam jointly working towards construction of Jorhat-Majuli bridge in 4 years, says Union Minister Sonowal

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday said that both the Center and the Assam government are committed and working jointly to complete a bridge over the Brahmaputra river connecting Majuli and Jorhat within four years. Sonowal’s statement, a former chief minister of Assam, came two days after a Majuli-bound boat sank in a river after it collided with a boat steamer near Nimati Ghat in Jorhat district, killing one person and leaving two others missing. “We all want a bridge over the Brahmaputra and both the state and central government have taken necessary steps in this direction so that it can be made well with latest technology,” Sonowal told media persons here.

The Union Minister for Shipping, Ports and AYUSH said that he respected the opinion of those who insisted that the boat accident could have been avoided had the Jorhat-Majuli bridge been in place.

The foundation stone of the bridge was laid in 2016 while Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed Bhoomi Pujan earlier this year. “Currently, the technical aspects are being examined with both the state and central governments, aiming to complete the project within the next four years,” Sonowal said.

Sonowal was elected from Majuli in 2016 and again in 2021, while he was twice elected MP from Lakhimpur constituency, under which the world’s largest river island is an assembly constituency. He became a Union minister in July and is yet to resign as a member of the Assam Legislative Assembly. Rejecting allegations from some sections that he had played politics over the bridge issue, he said, “The people of Majuli have elected me twice as MLA and also as an MP. I will never do politics with the people of the island because I respect and respect them.”

The state cabinet on Thursday decided to hand over the responsibility of monitoring the construction of the bridge to Finance Minister Ajanta Niog.

“This indicates the commitment of both the central and state government towards the people of Majuli. Both the governments are also taking steps to improve the infrastructural facilities at both Nimati Ghat and Kamalabari Ghat at the earliest.
