“Chalo Delhi”: Farmers Renew Protest Before Supreme Court Order

Farmers have been protesting on the outskirts of Delhi since last year.

Chandigarh:

Farmer groups protesting new central laws near Delhi have called for reinforcements ahead of a major Supreme Court hearing this week, which could mean the end of their year-long blockade.

Farmer leaders urged as many protesters from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and other states to join the agitation at the borders of Delhi.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court said it would examine this Thursday whether the right to protest was absolute and whether farmers have the right to take to the streets when their protest is rooted in issues – three New agriculture law – is in court.

The court raised sharp questions on the sit-in in the wake of the death of eight people, including four farmers, in violent protests in Uttar Pradesh on October 3.

The central government argued that there can be “no more farmer protests” as incidents like Lakhimpur Kheri cannot be allowed.

The Supreme Court was responding to a petition by a farmer’s group that wants to hold a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Opposing this, the central government mentioned the UP violence.

Attorney General KK Venugopal said, “Yesterday’s incidents in Lakhimpur Kheri… Eight died. The protest cannot be like this.” Feather. This leads to unfortunate incidents.”

The Supreme Court replied: “When such incidents happen no one takes responsibility. Damage to life and property. No one takes responsibility.”

A farmers’ group from Rajasthan has approached the Supreme Court seeking permission to launch a “satyagraha” with 200 farmers at Jantar Mantar. The court had earlier reprimanded the protest groups for “throttling the city” and asked the petitioner to file an affidavit that they were not part of the groups blocking the highways.

The Supreme Court objected to the petitioners’ filing of petitions in the Rajasthan High Court against agricultural laws and seeking permission to protest at Jantar Mantar.

The court said, “When you have already challenged the law then you cannot be allowed to protest? You cannot come in court and then protest outside also? If the matter is already sub-judice then Protest cannot be allowed.”

“When the government has already said that it is not yet implementing the laws and there is a stay on it from the Supreme Court, why are you protesting?” Justice AM Khanwilkar and CT Ravikumar asked.
