BENGALURU: After a central hesitation, the Karnataka government has revived its interest to secure funds for the development of the religious tourism centre. Chamundi Hills Suggested new tourist circuits in Mysore under Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual, Heritage Promotion Campaign (PRASAD) and under Swadesh Scheme of the Central Government.
In the recently concluded Southern Region Tourism and Cultural Ministers’ Conference, Union Tourism Minister G.Kishno reddy And state tourism minister Anand Singh found Karnataka at odds with each other on the reasons for not giving funds under the two tourism schemes for the development of the state circuit. Reddy termed it as Karnataka’s “failure” to provide the report, while Singh and the state tourism department termed it a “technical” rejection.
Due to the incident in Bengaluru and the ruling parties in both the Center and the state being similar, both the governments decided to “hurry” through a new proposal for Prasad and push for new tourist circuits. Swadesh Darshan.
With a grant of over Rs 100 crore from the central government, the schemes, if approved, are expected to help the Karnataka tourism sector, which is in distress due to the pandemic.
“Imagine this. There are 6,000 hotel rooms in Mysore which are practically empty because tourism in Mysore is only a day affair. If Chamundi Hills circuit is developed under PRASAD, we expect it to be in crisis. Will help in boosting the tourism sector,” a tourism official said, adding that a similar impact would be seen in districts and places that would be suggested under Swadesh.
During the tourism conference, the state made a detailed presentation on how it is going to develop the Chamundi Hills circuit at a cost of over Rs 50 crore.
According to presentation details obtained by TOI, the state government has proposed seven strategic ideas with integration of the temple complex and spiritual complex to be developed at the foot of Chamundi hills. The government intends to beautify the complex and upgrade the facilities, restore and redevelop the Nandi statue, Devi Lake, improve the outlook of the temple complex with guided walkways, centralized ticketing and parking facilities.
The department has proposed a ‘Smart Heritage’ idea, which includes an interactive museum and interpretation center describing the history of Chamundi Hills and Mysore with audio visual aid. The “Naratorium” will display Mysore’s Wadiyar, Souvenir Collection Store and Children’s Park with the theme of? Mahisha And Mahishasura Mardini. It will also have interactive signage, smart parking and information and weather warning systems.
The new report also proposes a zero-carbon emission circuit, with no vehicles allowed over hills, and electric buses to transport devotees and people. Tourism Secretary Pankaj Kumar Pandey said, “The central government officials were quite receptive to our presentation and we are hoping to secure funds under Prasad soon.”
On the Swadesh plan, the Karnataka government is waiting for the Center to announce the Swadesh 2 programme, under which it is likely to propose at least two to three new tourism circuits, including coastal, heritage and adventure sports.
