However, four hours after the incident, the police arrested the accused with the help of Ramdurga police in Belagavi district.
The incident happened at 12.23 pm.
Police sources said that the two men – posing as his followers – hit his stomach, back, arms, legs and other parts of the body more than 50 times at the reception counter and fled.
It can be seen in the CCTV footage recorded at the hotel that one of the two miscreants touched Guruji’s feet while the other attacked him with a knife.
While chasing him, the miscreant touched his feet and suddenly started stabbing Guruji too.
The two remove him from his seat and push him to the floor and keep on stabbing.
They also threaten the hotel staff who try to stop their attack.
After the incident, hotel staff and other customers fled to save themselves.
The miscreants completed their work in 1.03 minutes and fled from the spot.
Police Commissioner Labh Ram, DCP Law and Order Sahil Bagla, DCP Crime and Traffic Gopal Bycode, DCP CAR SV Yadav, Hubli North ACP Vinod Moktdar and other officials reached the spot.
Guruji’s body was sent to KIMS Hospital for postmortem.
Labhu Ram said that Guruji was called over the phone by two persons to come to the hotel after which he was attacked.
“We have taken this matter seriously and have appointed Hubli North ACP Vinod Moktedar as the investigating officer and formed five teams to nab the culprits. Our team is probing the matter from all angles. Guruji spent five days Had checked into the hotel earlier and was staying with his family,” he said.
Asked about the security lapse in the hotel, he said they were focusing on the investigation.
He confirmed in the evening that the two accused are Mahantesh Shirur and Manjunath Marewad, both residents of Dhumavad village in Kalaghatgi taluk.
“The cause of the murder is yet to be ascertained,” he said.
It may be recalled here that his employees staged a sit-in alleging non-payment of salaries for months.
It is learned that the accused were former employees of Guruji and had some financial issues with them.
