Chaos at US airports, more than 2700 flights canceled

Air travel continued to be severely disrupted in United States of america On Saturday, along with inclement weather in some parts of the country, the impact of a massive spike in COVID-19 infections was added, causing omicron Type.

According to the tracking website FlightAware, there were 2,723 canceled flights in the United States, more than half of the 4,698 canceled worldwide, at around 11:00 am (0400 GMT Sunday).

In addition, 5,993 domestic flights out of a total of 11.043 worldwide were delayed on Saturday.

The worst affected was US airline SkyWest, which had to cancel 23 percent of its flight schedule, according to the site.

In the United States, airports in Chicago were particularly badly affected by inclement weather, with a blizzard expected to hit the area Saturday afternoon and night.

The global air travel industry is still grappling with the highly contagious Omicron variant.

Many pilots, flight attendants and other staff are absent from work after contracting COVID-19, or because they are in quarantine after coming into contact with someone who has the infection.

Around 7,500 flights were canceled by airlines around the world over the Christmas weekend.
