Chaos in Kolkata amid demand for justice for the family of student leader Anish Khan

There was chaos in central Kolkata on Tuesday when hundreds of students of Alia University changed their course to protest the death of 27-year-old Anish Khan.

Khan was found dead outside his residence at Sharda Dakshin Khan Para village in Howrah district on the night of 18 February. His family has alleged that four men barged into his house on Friday night and pushed him off the terrace. The family members have also alleged that one of the four was wearing a police uniform, and demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Three level barricades with water cannons and a large number of police personnel were deployed along the Esplanade in Kolkata as well as on SN Banerjee Road near the College Street area. The protesters were stopped by the police on Mahatma Gandhi Road, where many of them were also detained.

Speaking to CNN-News18, one of the protesters said, “Khan was brutally killed by the policemen. He stood up for what was right. He also joined the protests against the Citizenship Act and the National Register for Citizens. ,

Another protester said, “We have taken to the streets to demand justice for his family.”

The West Bengal government has constituted a Special Investigation Team headed by the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police along with the Crime Investigation Department (CID) to probe the matter. The team will submit the report to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in 14 days.

However, Khan’s family said: “We will have no confidence in the SIT probe until the real culprits are caught.”

Meanwhile, three police personnel, including two sub-inspectors, have been suspended in connection with the case citing “disobedience of duty” as the initial reason.

Top district police officials said the accused took a long time to respond to the family’s initial distress call.
