Charanjit Singh Channi will take oath as the Chief Minister of Punjab at 11 am today.

New Delhi: Congress MLA Charanjit Singh Channi will take oath as the 16th Chief Minister of Punjab at 11 am today. The swearing-in ceremony will be held in Chandigarh.

Channi was unanimously elected as the leader of the Congress Legislature Party of Punjab and is set to take over as the next Chief Minister following the resignation of Captain Amarinder Singh.

Singh submitted his resignation to the state governor Banwarilal Purohit on Saturday.

These developments came a few months before the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.

Channi, a three-time MLA from Chamkaur Sahib in Rupnagar, will be the first Dalit Chief Minister of Punjab.

Channi was the Minister of Technical Education in the cabinet of outgoing Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.

He was elected to the Punjab Legislative Assembly for the first time in 2007 from Chamkaur Sahib seat. He was elected to the assembly seat in 2012 and again in 2017.
