Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel calls for transparency on Covid-19 postponement

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel called on the Premier League to be more transparent in decisions about postponing games due to COVID-19 after Leicester City’s Premier League match at Everton was canceled on Sunday.

Leicester had a reduced squad due to COVID-19 cases, injuries and players on international duty in the Africa Cup of Nations. It is the 19th Premier League match to be postponed this season.

“I doubt you can postpone a match because of the Africa Cup of Nations, it will be a big surprise,” Tuchel told reporters before traveling to Tottenham Hotspur for the second leg of the League Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

“All the details in the regulations, I must admit, I am not aware of that. Transparency helps most of the time and in these situations it helps people understand why… it will be good for all.”

Liverpool’s semi-final first leg against Arsenal last week was postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, but manager Juergen Klopp said it contained several false positives, with Trent Alexander-Arnold being the only confirmed case.

“I believe he and others will look into it. It could be. We had a wrong test in Wolverhampton, a wrong result of a test to send Jorginho straight home,” Tuchel said.

Chelsea were asked to postpone their league game against Wolverhampton Wanderers on 19 December after seven positive cases wiped out their team, but the request was turned down.

“When we got to Wolverhampton we had a big case and there were actually seven who were positive. We thought we had the possibility of postponing a match,” Tuchel said.

“Decisions taken. You know my opinion about it but I won’t comment on other conditions at the club. We fought, we can still struggle like anybody at any time.”

Tuchel said he would make a late decision on availability on Thiago Silva and N’Golo Kante, who missed the first leg of the semi-finals after testing positive for COVID-19 last week.

Chelsea took control of the tie by winning the first leg 2–0 at Stamford Bridge.
