Chennai rain: Heavy rain brought the city to a standstill, NDRF team deployed

Several areas in Chennai were inundated after heavy overnight rains lashed the southern Indian coast, forcing authorities to issue warnings and evacuate people from low-lying areas.

The IMD has predicted more rainfall in the city, which has seen heavy rainfall after almost six years.

Cyclonic Circulation over North Tamil Nadu:

The Meteorological Department said on Sunday that a cyclonic circulation lies over North Coastal Tamil Nadu, southeast of Bay of Bengal and is likely to become a low pressure area by November 9 and over the state for at least the next three days. Widespread rain forecast.

Rescue Operations:

Four teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been sent to Madurai, Chengalpet, Tiruvallur to assist in the rescue work while SDRF teams have been sent to Thanjavur and Cuddalore districts. A 24-hour toll free number- 1070 has been set up to receive rain-related complaints in the city.

School closed:

Chief Minister MK Stalin declared two-day holiday in schools in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpet and Kancheepuram districts due to heavy rains.

Traffic on the Guindy-Koyambedu road has been affected due to water-logging due to heavy rains in Chennai.

The Chief Minister said that 11 other districts, including Chennai, are also affected by rain of about 20 cm or more, which is unusual. He said that there was not much rain in other districts, but instructed to be vigilant round the clock in such districts.

Northeast Monsoon:

With the onset of the northeast monsoon in October, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry regions have received nearly 43 per cent more rainfall, a weather official said. Since Saturday morning, it rained intermittently in several suburbs of Chennai and Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts and it rained intermittently since last night.

Districts like Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Tiruvarur, Villupuram, Erode, Karur, Cuddalore, Pudukottai, Perambalur received more than 60 per cent of the normal rainfall.

The state government has installed pump sets at 500 different places to remove the stagnant water. Apart from this, 50 thousand food packets were also distributed. Relief camps providing food, shelter and medical care have been opened in the city.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted ‘moderate’ rain in the city till November 11. Meanwhile, heavy rains have been predicted over Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Kerala, Karnataka and Coastal Andhra Pradesh till November 11.
