Chhath Puja 2022 Day 1: Nahay Khay marks the beginning of the four-day festival of Chhath. The auspicious festival begins six days after Diwali. This year the auspicious festival is starting from 27th October with the traditional ceremony of Nahay Khay, which is celebrated on the first day of this four day long festival. To thank the Sun God for sustaining life on earth, devotees observe a fast, and offer their prayers by worshiping Chhathi Maiya. Chhath Puja is considered to be the only Vedic festival dedicated to Surya (Sun God).

This festival starts from the Chaturthi of Shukla Paksha and continues till Saptami Tithi. Chhath is mainly celebrated in the Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Orissa and also in some parts of Nepal.

Chhath Day 1 Bathing Ritual

The first day of Chhath Puja is known as Kaddu Bhaat or Nahay Khay. On this day devotees wake up early, take bath and wear new clothes. People like to take a dip in the rivers to start their fast and make resolutions to observe the fast with full devotion. Then, they seek the blessings of Chhathi Maiya and begin the puja.

On this day the Parvaitins (main worshipers who observe fast) cook sattvik Kaddu Bhaat with lentils and serve it as bhog to the deity in the afternoon.

Food is cooked in bronze utensils using mango wood on an earthen stove. Women observing fast should eat only once in a day.

There are many folktales revolving around Chhath Puja. It was first commissioned by the son of Surya, Karna, who ruled the Anga country during the Mahabharata era.
