BEIJING: China on Thursday sought to defend its move to block the US and India’s proposal at the United Nations to blacklist the deputy chief of Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). Abdul Rauf AzhariStating that it needs more time to assess the application to designate it as a global terrorist.
China on Wednesday withheld proposals to nominate Azhar, brother of the Jaish-e-Mohammed chief of India and the US Masood AzhariAs a global terrorist and subject to asset freeze, travel ban and arms embargo.
“We need more time to assess the relevant application,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman wang Wenbin told a media briefing while answering a question.
Wang said the UNSC’s 1267 Committee has clear guidelines regarding the designation and related procedures of terrorist organizations and individuals.
“China always participates in the work of the Committee in a constructive and responsible manner in strict accordance with these rules and procedures. We hope other members will do the same.
Abdul Rauf Azhar, born in Pakistan in 1974, was approved by the US in December 2010.
This is the second time in less than two months that China has blocked the blacklisting of a Pakistan-based terrorist by the US and India. sanctions committee of the United Nations Security Council.

Asked how long it will take for China to assess Azhar’s blacklisting application, Wang said, “We deal strictly with this matter in accordance with the relevant rules and procedures.”
Makki is the brother-in-law of US-designated terrorist and Lashkar-e-Taiba chief and 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed.
