China’s contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. on Tuesday launched a battery swap service for electric vehicles (EVs) called EVOGO, which it said will allow drivers to replace a car’s battery in a minute.

The battery maker will set up swap stations in ten cities around China and users will be able to access the service through an app, said Chen Weifeng, general manager of Contemporary Amperex Energy Service Technology Ltd., a subsidiary of CATL, in an event streamed online online. said during

Chen said the service allows drivers to swap out newly charged battery blocks at their swap stations.

Chinese automaker FAW Group’s Bestune NAT multi-purpose vehicle will be the first car with which the service will be compatible, he added, adding that more models will be added in the future.

“We treat batteries as a shared product rather than a consumer product for personal use,” Chen said.

The service allows drivers to swap out empty battery blocks for newly charged battery blocks at their swap stations.

He added that the EVOGO aims to address the challenge of “range anxiety, the inconvenience of recharging, and high buying and driving costs” for owners.

The launch of the EVOGO comes at a time when companies in the electric-vehicle sector are competing to cut costs and reduce “range anxiety” to increase the appeal of products, especially in China where EV sales have boomed. .

Chinese EV maker NIO has already built a network of 700 battery swapping stations across China since 2000, which allows NIO car owners to swap out a fully charged battery in three minutes.

Geely also said in September that it aims to install 5,000 battery swapping stations for electric vehicles globally by 2025.

Tesla’s fast charging technology Supercharger typically takes 15 minutes to recharge for a range of 200 miles. The US automaker has tested in the past, but then withdrew plans to offer battery swapping to customers.
