Beijing:

A lockdown of 13 million people in the Chinese city of Xian entered its seventh day on Wednesday, with many unable to leave their homes and virtually dependent on deliveries of essential items as new COVID-19 infections spread.

Xian reported 151 domestically transmitted infections with confirmed symptoms for Tuesday, or nearly all 152 cases nationwide, bringing the total number of local Xian cases to nearly 1,000 during the December 9-28 period . No cases of the Omicron variant have been announced in the city.

While Xian’s outbreak is smaller than outbreaks in many other places around the world, authorities imposed strict restrictions on travel within and leaving the city from 23 December, in line with Beijing’s campaign to immediately contain outbreaks. To stop as they appear.

From Monday, the Xian government has stopped allowing people wishing to leave their homes to buy essential goods, as epidemic prevention measures have been stepped up a notch.

It said in-person shopping could be resumed for people in low-risk areas after mass testing negative results, but did not say exactly when the stay-at-home order would be lifted.

This sparked complaints on social media from some residents about uncertain access to fresh produce.

The city government said that several district-level governments in Xian have started arranging for grocery delivery to residents.

Officials also launched a new round of city-wide testing on Wednesday.

There were no new COVID deaths in mainland China on Tuesday, bringing the death toll to 4,636.
