A man in China has been sentenced to death after being found guilty of setting his ex-wife on fire during a live streaming on an online portal. Tang Lu, a one-time man, was allowed to visit his family before his execution in southwestern Sichuan province, The Global Times reported.

In September 2020, Lu set his ex-wife on fire because she was live streaming on Douyin, a video platform similar to TikTok. The woman, known as Online Lamu, died of injuries a few weeks later.

The case attracted widespread condemnation and outrage across the country, focusing on what women face in abusive marriages.

Tang has a history of physical abuse towards Lamu, Chinese state media reported as the couple divorced in June 2020. He repeatedly asked her and asked him to remarry her in the following months, but she was turned down.

Lamu, a farmer, shared short videos and live streams from his daily life and the Sichuan countryside on Douyin. A woman of Tibetan origin, she often wore traditional Tibetan clothes in the videos.

Lu appeared behind her on the day of the incident as she was streaming live on the platform, poured petrol on her and set her on fire. He was soon arrested and sentenced to death in October 2021. He lost his court appeal in January 2022.
