Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the state assembly VD Satheesan said the Christian community in Kerala would not accept the BJP, which he called a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

The Congress in Kerala on Tuesday continued its attack on the BJP over the saffron party’s recent outreach to the Christian community, saying people understand the “hypocrisy” of the Sangh Parivar.

Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the state assembly VD Satheesan said the Christian community in Kerala would not accept the BJP, which he called a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Addressing the media here, Satheesan said the BJP is trying to reach out to the community by targeting the vote bank as the Sangh Parivar understands that they cannot attack Christians like in North India.

“Christians understand very well the hypocrisy of the BJP and its new love for that community. There has been an increase in the number of attacks towards the Christian community… In a petition filed before the Supreme Court, the community has stated that 598 churches were attacked… Recently, a BJP minister from Karnataka asked his followers Christians have been told to beat,” Satisan said.

He said that the Sangh Parivar is attacking Christians across the country, they are trying to woo members of that community in Kerala.

“The people of the state understand the hypocrisy of the BJP…they know that the visits of BJP leaders to bishops’ houses was a farce. The senior Congress leader said people will not accept the BJP which is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

The BJP’s minority outreach program and the ongoing visit of party leaders to Christian homes has drawn strong criticism from the Congress and the ruling CPI(M) in the state.

BJP leaders in Kerala met bishops of various Christian communities on Easter and hosted breakfast and a banquet for members of the group on the occasion of Vishu with an aim to woo the dominant minority religion.

He also organized ‘Sneha Yatra’ to Christian homes on Easter in an effort to build closer ties with the Christian community ahead of the 2024 general elections.

The BJP’s massive minority outreach program is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement last month that the party would wrest power in the southern state.

In Kerala, both the ruling CPI(M) and the opposition Congress criticized the BJP’s move to cater to the Christian community, alleging that it indicated “double standards” of the saffron party.
