CIL records 18.6% growth in overall opencast production in December

New Delhi : State-owned Coal India Ltd (CIL) on Monday said it has registered an 18.6% increase in overall opencast production in December as compared to the same month a year ago.

“The overall production of Coal India (CIL), taking into account Over Burden Removal (OBR) and production of coal through opencast mines, increased by 18.6% to 1,439.6 million cubic meters McuM for the quarter ended December FY’23, Which was compared to a year ago. period,” the company said in a statement.

This was 101% of target achievement on progressive basis.

The state-owned coal mining maharatna drilled 1,154.2 McuM OBR till December of the current fiscal, registering a growth of 19.2% over the same period last year and achieving 101% of the target.

CIL has also manufactured sand from OB, creating assets from waste in an eco-friendly manner. Presently, the demand for sand is met through sand mining and extraction from riverine waterways which severely affects the riverine ecosystem.

As an effort towards the conservation of the ecosystem, CIL has taken a path-breaking initiative of segregation of sand from overburden structures.

The three OB to sand conversion projects currently being operated by subsidiaries of CIL produced 16,643 cum of sand till Nov FY23. The company is planning to set up six more projects. All the nine plants are targeted to produce 3 million cubic meters of sand annually once fully operational. It provides manufactured sand at affordable rates and in an eco-friendly manner. This step also helps in improving the ecosystem of the river.
