City to host Indira Marathon this year Allahabad News – Times of India

Prayagraj: After being off track due to the pandemic in 2020, the country’s ace runners will once again compete in the popular 36th edition of the All India Prize Money. Indira Marathon will be held in Sangam city on 19th November.
Held annually, this 42.195 km (for both men and women) marathon marks the birth anniversary of the late Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, which falls on 19 November.
The race will start from Anand Bhawan and end at Madan Mohan Malviya Stadium in the city.
However, this year there has been a slight change in the route of the marathon as the runners will have to cross the new Yamuna bridge towards Rewa Road and then return by taking a U-turn on the same route. District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar Khatri approved the new route of Indira Marathon in the meeting and also directed the officials to make necessary repairs of the road for the benefit of the athletes keeping in view the route of the marathon.
The first edition of the marathon was organized on 19 November 1985 after being flagged off by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
“With the finalization of the route, now the officials of all the concerned departments have been instructed to prepare for the event. The roads will be repaired and the traffic management plan for the route will also be prepared accordingly. The ARTO has also been directed in this regard.
The DM has directed the Municipal Corporation, Health, Traffic and Education Department to prepare for the marathon. SDM (Sadar) has been made the nodal officer of the marathon. The DM has also instructed the inspectors of district schools to ensure the participation of school children including the closing ceremony. He has also asked the ADM (city) to depute sector magistrates along the marathon route so that the event can be run smoothly.
The Sports Department on Thursday put a ‘kilometer mark’ on the new route of the marathon.
“Runners will run with a computer chip attached to their shoes or clothing. As per the rules of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), the chip has been made mandatory in the marathon. These chips will record the timing of the runners. In addition, the entire route and race will be monitored through a network of CCTVs installed at major intersections of the city,” said regional sports officer Anil Tiwari.
The official said that after flagging off from the historic Anand Bhawan Gate, the participants would run through Teliarganj, Mayo Hall Crossing, High Court, CMP College, New Yamuna Bridge, Rewa Road till the end of Madan. Mohan Malviya Stadium Via Hanuman Mandir.
In the previous edition of this famous marathon (35th in 2019), Rahul Kumar Pal of Amethi had won by clocking 2:28:35 seconds. Harendra Kumar of Ghazipur secured second position, Hetram of Sewa secured third position. In the women’s section, West Bengal’s Shyamala Singh has created history by winning for the first time. She was followed by Nita Patel of Allahabad and Anita Rani of Haryana who secured the third position.
