Climate protection not a crime: Greta Thunberg after detention in Germany

Greta Thunberg was detained in protest against coal mine expansion in Germany

Luetzerth, Germany:

Environmental activist Greta Thunberg launched a fast-paced election campaign on Wednesday after being briefly detained for protesting coal mine expansion in Germany, tweeting that protecting the climate is not a crime.

Ms Thunberg tweeted: “Yesterday I was part of a group that peacefully protested the expansion of a coal mine in Germany. We were detained by the police and then taken into custody, but were released later in the evening.” “

“Climate protection is not a crime.”

He was detained along with other activists who were protesting against the demolition of the village of Luetzerath to make way for the expansion of an opencast coal mine owned by RWE.

Ms Thunberg was carried by three police officers and held by one hand to a spot away from the edge of the mine and led back to the police van. He was released later in the evening.

He has called the mine expansion a betrayal of present and future generations and accused Germany of being one of the world’s biggest polluters.

The protests have highlighted rising tensions over Berlin’s climate policy with environmentalists arguing that climate targets are being neglected with the return of dirty fuel during an energy crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
