West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated it on Thursday Ganga Aarti at Kadamtala Ghat in KolkataAs happened in Varanasi.

He said that there would be aarti everyday in the evening.

“In summers the aarti will be at 7 pm while in winters it will be around 6 pm,” he said.

Ms Banerjee said a temporary platform, on which aarti would be performed on the ghats of the Hooghly river, would be removed every morning and re-installed in the evening.

During the rituals, priests chanted mantras in front of the idol of Goddess Ganga, while the Chief Minister blew the conch shell.

The Baje Kadamtala Ghat on the Hooghly River was decorated for the event. The event was attended by Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, senior government officials and others.

Ms Banerjee had directed the KMC to start the Ganga Aarti on January 12, the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
