Cochin Shipyard bags ₹550 crore order for Zero Emission Feeder Container Vessel

Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has bagged an order to design and build the world’s first zero-emission feeder container vessel with an option for two more vessels, informed the company in a BSE filing on Friday. The vessel will be powered by hydrogen fuel cells with Green Hydrogen.

M / s. Samskip Group, a global logistics solutions provider, has placed an order to build two Zero Emission Feeder Container Vessels, and they also have an option to build two more vessels. The Norwegian government’s green funding program is promoting emission-free transport solutions by implementing innovative and sustainable futuristic technologies and this ambitious project falls within its ambit.

The total project cost for the firm order is approximately Rs. 550 crores and the first vessel is to be delivered in 28 months and the second within 34 months.

These vessels can carry around 365 nos of 45 ft long high cube containers and are intended to serve the European market where sustainable transport solutions are in high demand, said a compliance filing at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

The ships are estimated to reduce approximately 25,000 tonnes of CO2 annually in zero-emission mode. They will also use green noise power when docked at a port of call, helping them achieve zero-emission operations. Delivery of the vessels is planned to commence in the third quarter of 2025. The ships will include a hybrid power system consisting of hydrogen fuel cells, and for extended endurance, they will have backup diesel generators.

The company noted that none of the promoters, promoter group or group companies have any interest in the entity which had placed the order. Further, the said order also does not fall within the ambit of related party transaction.
