Coimbatore builders seek relaxation in norms for obtaining building completion certificate

Former state president of the Builders Association of India (BAI) K. Vishwanathan said here on Saturday that the state government should relax the norms for buildings to obtain completion certificates.

About 90% of the recently constructed buildings here are awaiting power supply as they need to obtain building completion certificates from the local planning authority, Mr. Vishwanathan told reporters. But, the criteria for obtaining the certificate were stringent. The builders had appealed to the state government to relax the rules.

Moreover, in all those areas which were newly added to the corporations but were earlier part of panchayats, there were problems in getting building plan approval even for expansion works. Buildings in these areas were constructed several years back and do not meet the road width and setback space requirements prescribed for the Corporations. He said that there should be relaxation for construction in the newly added areas.

Former BAI President R. Radhakrishnan said a tripartite committee had submitted its document on contract conditions for government contractors to the NITI Aayog four years ago. But, the suggestions in the document were yet to be implemented. The government should implement the recommendations at the earliest. He said that the Central Government should also recognize the construction sector as an industry.

BAI-Coimbatore Chairman M. Saravanan said the Builders Day event would be held at Le Meridien here on January 22, in which around 400 delegates from across the state are expected to participate. The annual state level meeting of the association will be held on January 23. BAI’s Coimbatore center has recently launched a project to train young engineers at construction sites with stipend for six months. He said that there is a plan to train 40 engineers in a year.
