Coimbatore reports two deaths, 3,912 new COVID-19 cases

A total of 3,912 persons tested positive for COVID-19 in Coimbatore district on Sunday.

The health department said that 1,957 persons have recovered from the disease and the district had 22,921 active cases on Sunday. Two more persons from the district died of COVID-19, taking the toll to 2,545.

On Sunday, 1,507 new cases were reported in Tiruppur district and 736 people were cured. There were 6,438 active cases in the district on Sunday.

A total of 418 persons tested positive for COVID-19 in the Nilgiris on Sunday. The district’s total case count stood at 38,000. A total of 2,036 people are undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, the total lockdown imposed as a preventive measure against the COVID-19 spread in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts on Sunday was total. Police said only vehicles plying for essential services and other emergencies were allowed.

The Coimbatore city police had deployed 788 personnel to check vehicles at several places. Very little traffic was seen on Avinashi Road, Tiruchi Road, Mettupalayam Road, Palakkad Road, Sathyamangalam Road and Thadgam Road.

Coimbatore Rural Police on Sunday tasked 500 personnel to enforce the lockdown. Vehicular movement between Tamil Nadu and Kerala through major inter-state check posts including Walayar was minimal, even as the total Sunday lockdown was in effect in Kerala. Police and health department staff checked people’s whereabouts, documents and temperature at inter-state check posts before allowing them inside Coimbatore district. Goods vehicles carrying essential goods are exempted from checking.

Shops and establishments remained closed in Tiruppur district. Police checked vehicles at important places along the city and district boundaries.

Cases were registered against some people who went out unnecessarily and who violated the COVID-19 safety norms.

Coimbatore Corporation officials on Sunday imposed a total fine of ₹70,500 on people violating the lockdown norms. Sources said Deputy Commissioner M. Sharmila and flying squads toured the city to enforce the lockdown and impose fines on violators. Till Sunday evening, the corporation had imposed a fine of ₹70,500 on those who ventured out during the lockdown and did not wear masks.
