Colin Firth, Toby Jones and others join Sam Mendes’ ‘Empire of Light’

The film, which is set in and around a beautiful old cinema on the south coast of England in the 1980s, marks Mendes’ first solo outing as a screenwriter.

Colin Firth, Toby Jones, Crystal Clarke and Tanya Moody have joined the cast of “Empire of Light”, a romantic drama directed by Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes.

The film, which is set in and around a beautiful old cinema on the south coast of England in the 1980s, marks Mendes’ first solo outing as a screenwriter.

The powerhouse cast quartet joins Academy Award winners Olivia Colman and Michael Ward in the previously announced cast in the film, reported time limit.

“Empire of Light”, a Searchlight Pictures title, is the follow-up to Mendes’s 2020 Best Picture nominated war drama “1917”.

For his next film, the filmmaker is collaborating once again with legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins, who won the Oscar for Best Cinematography at the 2020 Academy Awards for his work on “1917.”

Mendes will also produce the project with Pippa Harris through his Neil Street Productions.

Double Oscar winner Colin most recently starred opposite Coleman in Eva Hussein’s Sony Pictures Classics drama “Mothering Sunday.” Jones will next appear in John S Baird’s historical drama Tetris, Sebastian Lelio’s The Wonder and a fifth Indiana Jones film.

Clarke recently completed filming on the second and third series of Masterpiece’s “Sanditon” and will next appear in Sean McNamara’s fantasy feature “The King’s Daughter”.

Moody is currently starring in the Sky Original series “A Discovery of Witches”.
