College students forcibly given TC citing low online presence – Times of India

CHENNAI: Many colleges in rural districts Tamil Nadu Forcibly giving Transfer Certificate (TC) to students citing low online attendance.

Most of the students were called and told that their transfer certificates were ready and asked to collect it.

Rajesh. K, a second year student of a private arts and science college in Erode, has filed a complaint with the district collector that the principal of the college had called him and asked him to leave the college by accepting the transfer certificate. When contacted by IANS the student said, “I am an agricultural assistant to my parents and I do not have much time to attend online classes. Whenever I am ready to attend classes, So I don’t get the proper signal and that has created a problem. With the college and the authorities, I have been asked to leave the college.”

When contacted, students from colleges in Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Salem, Madurai said that they are being targeted by private colleges citing low attendance.

Another student from a college in Virudhunagar, on the condition of anonymity, said: “I told the college authorities that I didn’t have a smartphone, but they said it was not their concern.”

Speaking to IANS, the principal of a private college in Erode said, “We don’t know what their exact issue is. Despite asking, they didn’t talk to us.”

The principal of the college said that many students are skipping classes thinking that they do not need to attend classes to appear for the examinations. The college administration believes that some parents are also taking advantage of the leniency shown towards the students.

In Salem too, many students complained that they were being forced to accept transfer certificates even if they wanted to continue their education.

A student pursuing BA 2nd year in English Literature said, “The college principal has been calling me time and again. He told me that I would have to accept the certificate and that it was difficult for the college to keep me going in the class. I am the first person in my family to go to a college and I want to clear the exam somehow.”

Most of the students contacted by IANS said that they want to complete their course and get degree certificate and they will not accept transfer certificate.
