‘Comedy Circus’: At Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ stop, wrong national anthem gives ammunition to BJP

Rahul Gandhi’s ambitious ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ is once again in the news, but this time for all the wrong reasons. A viral video of wrong songs being played for a few minutes instead of the national anthem during a stop in Maharashtra on Wednesday has sparked a controversy, with the BJP targeting the Congress for the blunder.

Sharing a video of the incident, Maharashtra BJP leader Nitesh Rane tweeted: “Papu’s comedy circus.” Tamil Nadu BJP leader Amar Prasad Reddy also shared the same video and wrote, “Rahul Gandhi, what is this?”

Live broadcast of the visit confirmed that the incident took place in Maharashtra’s Washim district as Gandhi finished his speech. An announcement was made for the national anthem, which Rahul Gandhi Lots of repetition on the microphone. As the leaders on the dais took their seats, music was played for a few seconds before Gandhi gestured to the leaders and the music stopped. Later Jana Gana Mana was played.

The incident also invited criticism from several social media users, who expressed their prolonged disbelief by politicians in understanding the gaffe. The Congress has not yet reacted to the controversy.

‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, a mass contact initiative of the Congress, entered Maharashtra on 7 November in Nanded district. Apart from Nanded, it has so far covered Hingoli and Washim districts of the state.

The foot march will cover Maharashtra’s Akola and Buldhana districts before moving to Madhya Pradesh on November 20.

Leaders of the Nationalist Congress Party and Shiv Sena, Congress’ ally in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), participated in the yatra in Maharashtra.

Gandhi on Wednesday hit out at the Center and the BJP, claiming that their policies have destroyed the Indian economy and broken the backs of farmers.

Small and medium business enterprises, not big industrial houses, create large-scale employment, but they were at the receiving end of the Centre’s 2016 demonetisation exercise and the way the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was rolled out in 2017, he said.
