Commonwealth Games: Mirabai Chanu shows invincibility, wins gold for India

Mirabai Chanu remained unbeaten in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting event. He won India’s first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham on Saturday.

Olympic medalist Chanu beat the opponents by lifting a total of 201 kg, which is a new record in the Games.

Mary Ranivosoa won the silver medal by lifting a total of 172 kg in snatch with 76 kg and clean and jerk with 96 kg. This means Chanu was the undisputed winner with a difference of 29kg in first and second place. Hannah Kaminski, on the other hand, won the bronze medal with a lift of 74kg in snatch and 97kg in clean and jerk by lifting 171kg.

Chanu registered a Commonwealth Games record by lifting 88kg in her second attempt at snatch. He lifted 84 kg in his first attempt at snatch. However, she failed to lift 90 kg in her third attempt.

When it comes to clean and jerk, Manu lifted 109 kg in the first attempt and 113 kg in the second attempt, but failed to lift 115 kg in the third attempt.

The 27-year-old had earlier won a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and a gold medal during the 2018 multi-nation event.

Chanu was awarded the Padma Shri and Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna by the Government of India for his contribution to sports.

Earlier, Gururaja Pujari had won a bronze medal in the 61kg men’s category and Sanket Sargar won the silver medal in the 55kg men’s category, making Chanu’s medal third for the country.

Later in the day, S Bindyarani Devi (55kg) will compete for the top honours.
