Singer-composer Sachin Warrier released his new composition ‘Arariro’ this Mother’s Day. Lullaby, sung by Sitara Krishnakumar, is the first single from wordHis new EP featuring “Crowdsource Lyrics”.

Sachin says that the idea of crowdsourcing songs came to his mind during the lockdown. “It was a period of uncertainty. There were no shows, new projects were getting delayed and I was missing out on creative engagement with the audience. I spent a few months exploring and learning my hobbies and new things. I was desperate to make music and I thought of taking inspiration from outside. So I put up a post on my social media handle inviting the lyrics.”

A new take on motherhood

‘Arariro’ is written by Bangalore-based Anagha Meera Manoharan. Sachin says that the lyrics of the song match with him because of the theme. “There’s more to this lullaby. It looks at motherhood in a new light in that words don’t glorify the sacrifices a mother makes. Mother talks about her limitations and that she is not perfect. She clarifies to Betty that she won’t do everything for her and therefore wants her to figure out some things on her own. When I read the lyrics of the song, I thought this song deserved to be made. It had a rhythm in the lyrics And the words inspired me so much that I composed it immediately. It was magical.”

He also received entries with Hindi and English songs. The EP has three more tracks – one each in English, Hindi and Malayalam.

Sachin explains that it was refreshing to compose the tune after getting the lyrics of the song. “Usually, in films, the composition comes first and the songs are written accordingly. This process was liberating. I had the creative freedom to make any tune I liked and it was inspiring. If the songs have musicality, it is easy to compose. Since the EP is about a song, I named it ‘Word’.”

Sachin says that there is no theme connecting the four songs and each song belongs to a different genre. While the English track is in bluegrass style, the Hindi song is in a ghazal-like format and the Malayalam one is a love song. “While none of these songs are strictly in those genres, they certainly draw inspiration from them,” he says.

Sachin has mentioned that the last two years have helped him learn a lot about himself as a person and as an artiste. “I am impatient inside and I am used to going from one thing to another. I am going with the flow, recording and doing shows and never thought what I might do in the future. In the last two years I understood more about my creative process and realized that I could do more things. One of the things I explored and discovered was filmmaking.” Sachin Concepts and Directs the Music Video of ‘Arariro’, “With the Help of Our Cinematographer” [KJ Sarat]He also started a podcast (‘Sachin Warrior Gets Lost’) on his YouTube channel (Sachin Warrier).
