The Congress on Sunday released the list of candidates for the by-elections to three assembly seats in Meghalaya. All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge of the Congress Election Committee Mukul Wasnik released the list containing the names of three candidates after the approval of party president Sonia Gandhi.

In the East Khasi Hills district, the opposition party has fielded Highlander Kharmalki as its candidate to retain the Mawringkeng seat. Kharmalki unsuccessfully contested the 2018 assembly elections on a PDF ticket. He came in second.

Kennedy Cornelius Khairim, a former MLA from Mawphlang seat, became the Congress candidate.

Hasina Yasmin Mandal, wife of late Dr Azad Zaman, has been given ticket from Rajabala seat.

By-elections were necessitated following the death of two Congress MLAs – David A Nongrum from Mawringkeng and Dr Azad Zaman from Rajabala – and SK Sun, an independent legislator from Mawphlang.
