Congress announces implementation of 5 guarantees in first cabinet meeting in Karnataka

On May 20, the first cabinet meeting of the newly formed government in Karnataka decided to implement the five guarantees made to voters in the Congress party’s election manifesto.

According to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who chaired a meeting of his nine cabinet colleagues, the estimated cost of implementation of the five schemes would be ₹50,000 crore per year.

The 5 schemes that Congress has guaranteed are

  1. Griha Jyoti – 200 units of free electricity per month to every household

  2. Griha Lakshmi – ₹2,000 per month to each female head of the household

  3. Anna Bhagya – Distributing 10 kg rice every month to each member of BPL family

  4. Yuva Nidhi – Rs 3,000 to unemployed graduates, Rs 1,500 to unemployed diploma holders every month for two years (in 18-25 age group).

  5. Shakti – Free travel for women in general public transport buses across Karnataka

Mr. Siddaramaiah said that the details of the implementation of these schemes would be worked out during the next cabinet meeting. The concerned departments have been asked to issue orders for the implementation of these schemes.

Three-day session of Vidhansabha from May 22

The cabinet also decided to hold a 3-day session of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Monday, May 22, for the swearing-in of newly-elected legislators as members of the assembly.

Nine-time MLA RV Deshpande will be the pro-tem speaker of the assembly. He will administer the oath of office to the newly elected MLAs.

All the MLAs will elect the new speaker of the assembly after taking the oath.
