Congress leaders picket at CM residence, Bhagwant Mann refuses to meet him

Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and other party leaders protested at the CM’s residential premises on Thursday, complaining that he failed to keep his appointment with him. Congress leaders claimed that they were called inside the CM residence here, searched and their mobile phones were also snatched.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, however, denied that he gave time to Congress leaders and said they staged a protest in support of leaders of his party facing corruption charges. Mann was apparently referring to the arrest of former Forest Minister and Congress leader Sadhu Singh Dharamsot and the nomination of Sangat Singh Gilzian in a corruption case.

Waring and Leader of Opposition in the state assembly Pratap Singh Bajwa, former deputy CMs Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and OP Soni, former ministers Aruna Chaudhary and Bharat Bhushan Ashu were present during the protests. Waring claimed that when he reached the CM residence in the morning, he was made to wait for 45 minutes.

Later, they were called inside the residence, Waring said, adding that Congress leaders were “insulted” as they were searched and their mobile phones taken away. Later, the opposition leaders were told that the chief minister was busy and he could meet them at 1 pm on Friday, he said. Congress leaders then staged a sit-in inside the CM residential complex and raised slogans against the government led by Bhagwant Mann.

Congress leader Pratap Singh Bajwa said that he has never seen a government that insults opposition leaders. “Our mobiles were kept and the leaders were searched. I have never faced such humiliation,” Bajwa said.

Later, the Chandigarh Police took all the Congress leaders into custody and took them to the nearby police station in a bus. Chief Minister Mann said that Congressmen came to his residence without taking any time and staged a dharna in support of their leaders facing corruption charges.

In a tweet, he said that supporting those who looted Punjab is proof that bribery is in their blood.
