Ribadia, a leader of the Patidar community, was elected from the Patel community seat on a Congress ticket in 2017.

Congress MLA and Patidar community leader Harshad Ribadia on Tuesday resigned from the assembly membership just ahead of the Gujarat elections. An official release from the state assembly said the opposition MLA submitted his resignation to Speaker Nimaben Acharya, who has accepted it.

Harshad Ribadia, MLA from Visavadar in Junagadh district, submitted his resignation to the Speaker late Tuesday night, the release said. It further stated that the Speaker accepted Ribadia’s resignation, as he was convinced that he had resigned on his own and without any coercion.

Ribadia, a leader of the Patidar community, was elected from the Patel community seat on a Congress ticket in 2017. The 2017 assembly elections were held in the backdrop of the Patidar reservation agitation and members of the Patel community in the Saurashtra region largely voted for the Congress to express their anger against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Ribadia has been a vocal critic of the BJP government in the last four-and-a-half years. BJP sources said he is likely to join the ruling party soon.

Ribadia could not be reached for comment. Gujarat assembly elections are due by the end of the year.
