Congress ready for all options to keep BJP out of power in Goa: Kamato

Questioning the BJP’s delay in forming the new government in Goa, the Congress on Friday said it was ready to explore all possible options to keep the saffron party out of power. However, a group of BJP MLAs said the party would stake claim to form the government in the next four or five days.

The BJP, which won 20 out of 40 seats in the Goa Assembly elections last month and secured the support of two Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party MLAs and three independents, is yet to stake claim to form a new government. Senior Congress leader Digambar Kamat told reporters here that the failure to stake claim indicates that all is not well within the BJP.

Congress had won 11 seats in the election. The results were declared on March 10. Kamat said the Congress party was open to all options to form a non-BJP government in Goa, which would in fact uphold the verdict of the assembly elections.

He claimed that the BJP could win 20 seats, one less than the majority figure, simply because the votes were divided. Percentage voters didn’t want BJP.”

Even a week later (after the results) the BJP has failed to form the government. He said that the BJP leadership is just buying time, giving some excuse or the other. He said the governance has come to a standstill after the model code of conduct was announced in January.

Nothing big has happened in the last two months. Monsoon is fast approaching and a lot of preparation is pending. He said that steps should be taken to ensure that the people of Goa get a complete non-BJP government.

Minutes after Kamat’s press conference, a group of BJP MLAs including Subhash Faldesai, Govind Gowde and Daji Salkar held another press conference. The BJP has won the mandate with 20 seats. Faldesai said that we will stake claim to form the government in the next four or five days.

He said the Congress should accept the fact that its vote share decreased in the 2022 elections, while that of the BJP increased. The Congress’s performance was so bad that their president had to ask (state unit chief) Girish Chodankar to step down, Faldesai said. ,

He also asked why Kamat was appealing to non-BJP MLAs to join forces through a press conference instead of holding a meeting. The division of votes has also affected the BJP. Otherwise we would have won a few more seats, he said.
