Congress trying to emulate us: TMC on decision to field 40% women candidates for UP Assembly polls

The sarcasm from the Mamata Banerjee-led party comes at a time when both the Congress and the TMC are trying to lead the opposition front against the BJP.

The Trinamool Congress on Wednesday mocked the Congress’ decision to field 40 per cent women candidates in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls and hoped that the move to “imitate” the ruling party in West Bengal was not mere “symbolism”.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had announced on Tuesday that the party would give 40 per cent tickets for the UP assembly elections to women, who make up almost half of the electorate.

“Under the visionary leadership of @MamataOfficial, AITC has shown the way to ensure increased participation of women in politics in this country. We are the first party to give 40 percent seats to women in the Lok Sabha elections! TMC said in a tweet.

“Amidst such difficult times, @INCIndia is trying to emulate sensibly, and one can only hope that this is real and not a sign. If they are to be taken seriously, they will have to give 40 per cent seats to women in states other than UP.

The sarcasm from the Mamata Banerjee-led party comes at a time when both the Congress and the TMC are trying to lead the opposition front against the BJP.

Reacting to the remark, senior Congress leader Pradeep Bhattacharya said that the oldest party does not need lessons from the TMC on political empowerment of women.

“It is the Trinamool Congress which is trying to emulate the Congress and capture our leaders,” he said.

Earlier this month, after the TMC took a jibe at Rahul Gandhi’s defeat from Amethi in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the ties between the two parties came to a new level, wondering whether the Congress could handle the loss through a Twitter trend. Will delete

The TMC has opened a front against the party for its alleged failure to fight the BJP.

TMC mouthpiece ‘Jago Bangla’ also recently claimed that its supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, not Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, has emerged as the face of the opposition against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
