Constable awarded Army Chief’s Commendation Card for gallant rescue

New Delhi: In a remarkable display of bravery, Tamil Nadu constable Navneet Krishnan D jumped into the fast-flowing Bhakra canal and saved a drowning woman when he stopped to see why a crowd had gathered on the road.

Their adventure was caught on camera and shared on social media last week. It was praised by none other than Army Chief General Manoj Pandey.

He was awarded the Chief of Army Staff Citation by Gen Pande on 21 Jun 2023.

Army sources said that the incident took place on June 16, 2023, when Sepoy Krishnan, while returning from Patiala to Sangrur during ration collection duty, saw a crowd gathered near the Bhakra Canal.

They were told that a woman was drowning. Hearing this, the constable reacted quickly and ran 100 meters downstream towards the fast-flowing canal, where he saw a woman struggling in the water.

Without hesitation, he jumped into the canal and pulled her out safely. Army sources said that using his training as a basic first aid provider, he also performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to save his life.

Expressing his appreciation, General Pandey said, “Constable Navaneetha Krishnan D has displayed exceptional courage and presence of mind in saving the life of a woman. His act of bravery is an inspiration to all of us and we feel very proud to have him among us.

Enrolled in the Army Medical Corps since 11 December 2018, Sep Krishnan is currently serving at a field hospital in Patiala.

Described as physically fit, intelligent, courageous, hardworking and skilled in driving, he will continue to uphold the values ​​of the armed forces through his exceptional service, army sources said.
