Constable shot Odisha Health Minister Naba Das, condition critical. 10 facts

Odisha Health Minister Naba Das has been admitted to Apollo Hospital in Bhubaneswar after he was shot at allegedly by a policeman in Jharsuguda district on Sunday. His condition is critical and is currently in the operation theatre.

Deepak Kumar, Inspector General, North, said that Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police (ASI) Gopal Das shot the minister with his service gun. “After the shootout, the accused attempted to shoot local IIC Pradyuman Swain. He had a narrow escape,” he said.

The minister was in Jharsuguda today to inaugurate the BJD party office at Brajrajnagar.

Condemning the incident, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said, ‘I am shocked by the unfortunate incident of attack on Honorable Minister Naba Das. I strongly condemn the attack on him. I pray for his speedy recovery.”

Patnaik also reached Apollo Hospital to inquire about the health of the minister.

Federation Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also condemned the attack on Naba Das.

• The health minister was shot at Brajrajnagar town allegedly by ASI Gopal Das around 1 pm when Das, who was on his way to attend a function in the district, got down from the car to greet people.
• Naba Das was hit by two bullets in the chest. He was taken to Jharsuguda Hospital and later air ambulance to Apollo Hospital, Bhubaneswar.
• The condition of the minister is critical. He is currently in the operation theater of Apollo Hospital. He is being treated by a team of the best specialists in the state drawn from Apollo Hospitals, SCB MCH and Capital Hospital.
• The ASI has been arrested and taken into custody. He is being interrogated after seizing the weapon recovered from him. Sources said the motive behind the attack was not yet clear.

• Naba Das is a very influential leader of Jharsuguda. He left the Congress and joined the BJD a few years back.
• He was among the newly appointed ministers who took oath in June, 2022 after CM Naveen Patnaik decided to reshuffle his cabinet.
