Controversy over dress code in more colleges of Karnataka

Established in 1949, MGM Degree College is a Grade A recognized college by NAAC and is a renowned institution in the coastal region.

Though the situation on the college campus was tense for sometime in the forenoon as students gathered inside the campus and protested against each other, it eased after the college holiday was declared.

Afterwards the students gradually dispersed.

MGM Degree College principal Devidas Naik told presspersons that the campus of the colleges is healthy.

The issue of hijab has provoked students of colleges, who declared a holiday to bring the situation under control.

Colleges, both Pre University and Degree Section, will remain closed till the Management Committee takes a decision on reopening of classes.

Varsha, a student wearing a saffron shawl, told media persons outside the college in Udupi that the students were wearing shawls and pattas as some students came wearing hijabs. The college told students on Monday that neither shawls nor hijabs would be allowed in classes.

But some students wore hijab on Tuesday as well. “Hence, we also wore saffron shawls. We want equality and uniformity,” she said.

Asked whether students were wearing hijabs before college, he said they did. “But now as per the order of the government, it is not allowed,” she said.

Meanwhile, an altercation broke out in Dakshina Kannada on Tuesday with some students, both girls and boys, of Government First Grade College in Vamadapadavu in Bantwal taluk, wearing saffron shawls on the campus.

They raised slogans that the college should not allow girls to wear hijab inside the classrooms.

Seeing that the situation was getting tense, the college immediately declared a holiday for two days.

Mangalore University Registrar (Administration) CK Kishore Kumar told Hindu Colleges where holiday has been declared have been suggested to conduct online classes.

Another degree college in Dakshina Kannada, Pompeii College in Aikala, had a controversy over the dress code about a month ago. The dispute was later settled after the students agreed to attend classes wearing uniforms.
