New Delhi, 14 December

The condition of Group Captain Varun Singh, the only survivor of the IAF helicopter crash near Coonoor, is “critical but stable”, officials said on Tuesday.

Group Captain Singh is undergoing treatment at a military hospital in Bengaluru.

Last Thursday, Group Captain Singh was shifted from Wellington in Tamil Nadu to Command Hospital in Bengaluru.

The Group Captain, who was seriously injured after the accident, was admitted to a hospital in Wellington on Wednesday.

Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika and 11 armed forces personnel were killed in a Mi-17V5 helicopter crash near Coonoor.

Group Captain Singh, a respected officer, was on board a Russian-made helicopter as liaison officer for the visit of General Rawat, India’s most senior military officer, to the Defense Services Staff College in Wellington.

He was awarded the Shaurya Chakra in August for averting a possible mid-air accident after a major technical snag in his Tejas light combat aircraft last year. PTI
